The national library right from the very beginning has been an integral and important part of north Kolkata but even India. During the English rule in India, Kolkata became one of the metropolitans out of Britain. This place is a very beautifully designed and preserved attraction of the city even in today’s time. But there are a few dark secrets about the national library of Kolkata which is why it is one of the most haunted places in the entire state.
What’s the story?
The library was built by the then Governor-General of India because he and his wife were keen readers. They love reading new books and knowing about different cultures and other things. Lady Metcalfe, wife of the Governor-General was also a fanatic of cleanliness. She always wanted her things and surroundings clean and tidy.
Even today the guards and students who stayed back at the library to read or study have heard footsteps and shadow of Lady Metcalfe. The occurrence of shadow sighting and hearing of footsteps kept on increasing and more and more people started going through the same trauma. We all know that there is a soul in everyone’s body and an unnatural or forceful death can lead to a haunting spirit. What if I tell you the same story as what is happening in Hastings house. Hoax or truth whatever it may be, the hustings house has now been named as Bhoot Bangla.
What’s the story?
The huge and pretty mention that we see today as a ghost house was built by William Hastings during his governorship in Kolkata. The same place is now a girl’s college that functions under the university of Kolkata. Students have confirmed this a lot of times that they have seen a spirit of a man riding a horse and taking rounds of the college. It is believed that this ghost is of William Hastings. But nothing is for sure!
There is another story connected to the mansion in which people say that they have sighted a ghost of a boy who died in the Hasting’s ground unnaturally. There was no reason found and since then there have been multiple sightings of the boy.
3. South Park Street Cemetery
|52, Mother Teresa Sarani, Opposite The Assembly of God Church School (Senior Section), Park Street, Mullick Bazar, Park Street area, Kolkata
|Remains open between 10 am and 5 pm everyday
What will you say, do, or think if I ask you- have you ever felt something unearthly ever in your life? A few might say that they have but most would not be able to relate to this. But do you want to feel the chills in your bones? Beware, you should think before doing anything crazy at places like these. It is said that the cemetery looks and remains like any normal place during the day but becomes eerie from day fall.
What’s the story?
Although cemeteries are not a place to visit or enjoy, there have been some bravehearts or foolish people (call them whatever you feel like) who have visited here after 5 pm. Which is a strict no-no. It is said that a group of 5 people once visited here to show their guts. They filmed and clicked pictures around the cemetery during the night. All of them when they arrived had good health. But suddenly something happened to them all at once. One of the 5 men who visited here got a sudden heart-attack and died. The others followed later due to some or the other unnatural ways.
It is also said that the place is filled with negativity and those who live around the cemetery, usually feel unearthly. There have been a lot of times when paranormal experts have visited here but they failed to record things because their cameras stopped working. Noises, sounds, and other similar things keep happening during the night. Even the residents around keep their doors and windows closed.
4. Ghats Of The Ganges
Ganges is a holy river and people do a lot of religious practices in the river like putting the dash of their loved ones on their deathbed. Apart from this a lot of other activities are also done on the ghats of river Ganga at many places. And yes, one of them is Kolkata. The ghats Mullick and Zanana present in Kolkata are two active places where rituals and religious activities take place. And these are the spots where spooky things happen.
What’s the story?
Mullick and Zanana are two active ghats as we have already mentioned. They are not just used for religious activities but people come here to take a dip in the river to wash away their sins. But multiple people have sighted a pale hand coming out of water when they visited here early in the morning for a bath. This has scared the devil out of people and they have stopped visiting here early in the morning.

Putulbari, also known as the “House of Dolls,” is a 200-year-old mansion located in Kolkata, India, with a sinister reputation. Writers’ Building, an iconic colonial-era structure in Kolkata, bears the weight of history and a ghostly presence. The haunting tales surrounding this edifice are both chilling and mysterious. The ghost of a British lady, rumored to be the wife of a former governor, is said to wander its dimly lit corridors, her footsteps echoing through empty chambers. Her forlorn figure dressed in an archaic gown has been spotted by many night watchmen, sending shivers down their spines.
Eerie cries and whispers have been heard in the dead of night, leaving the bravest souls trembling. It’s believed that these restless spirits are the echoes of the building’s past, which witnessed countless political decisions, conflicts, and even executions during British rule. Writers’ Building’s history may be documented in books, but its supernatural stories are etched into the memories of those who have encountered the unexplained within its walls.
