    Have you heard about the “Scotland of the East”? Do you know which place is known by this name? The beautiful capital of Meghalaya is the destination that goes by this name. Shillong is one of the best places to visit in India and is encircled by pine trees. Shillong is an active hill station that stands tall at an altitude of 1496 m and it is the capital that provides relief to the people of the country from heat. Shillong has a soothing climate that makes it a suitable destination to travel throughout the year.

    But while you plan your trip to Shillong what are the attractions that can be visited? To help you out with that, here are some amazing destinations that you can visit.

    1. Umiam Lake

    The topmost attraction of Shillong is none other than the breathtaking Umiam Lake. People can enjoy the serenity as well as the water sports that are offered by the lake. During the peak season, you will find a lot of visitors heading to this amazing attraction. The lake is open between 9 am and 5 pm so plan your trip accordingly.

    On the other hand, if you want to kayak, boat, or canoe in the lake, you will have to pay 20 INR for 30 minutes. There are additional charges for different sports. Like you will be paying 200 INR for Skiing, 50 INR for the river bus ride, 100 INR for yachting, and 50 INR for water scooter.

    2. Elephant Falls

    The next very best destination to visit in Shillong is none other than the gorgeous waterfall that goes by the name of Elephant Falls. It was named such because initially, it had the shape of an elephant from which the water cascaded.

    The waterfall is restricted from visiting during Sundays. On the other days, people can visit here between 10 am and 6 pm. There is no entry fee to visit here. People love to spend their time with their partners and family around the waterfall. It is a superb place to visit amidst nature.

    3. Shillong View Point, Laitkor Peak

    You might be a nature lover or an avid adventurer; Shillong Peak is one of those places in Meghalaya that can’t be missed. It is also believed that this city gets its name from this peak. Situated at an altitude of 1965 m above sea level, the Shillong Peak is the highest point of the entire town.

    If you love trekking then leave early and try to reach the summit. From there, the view of the entire mountain range and the town looks prismatic. You will surely love the place and the charm and not forget the thrill it has on offer. You can take pictures and record videos for your memory. To make things simple there is an observatory deck installed and you just need to pay 10 INR to use it. The timings to visit the peak is between 9 am to 5 pm.

    4. Ward’s Lake

    Another amazing attraction of Shillong is Ward’s Lake which is located in the heart of Shillong. To visit this lake between November to February you will have to make plans between 8:30 am to 5:30 pm whereas between March and October the timings are 8:30 to 7:00 pm.

    The entry fee for an adult is INR 10 and for kids, it is INR 5. This artificial lake is surrounded by a lush green garden that makes this lake even more beautiful than it is. The horseshoe lake has an admirable surrounding and peaceful environment where people love to spend their time with their partners.

    5. Don Bosco Museum

    Not all the places in Shillong are the gift of nature, there are some that are created by man. There are different timings that you will have to follow if you want to visit the Don Bosco Museum. If you are visiting here in Summers the timings to visit the museum are between 9 am and 5:30 pm whereas in Winters the timing is 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.

    Before making your itinerary does note that the Don Bosco Museum is closed on Sundays and all the national holidays. The Indian adults have to pay 100 INR as the entry fee whereas foreigners have to pay 200 INR. Indian students have to pay 50 INR and foreign students have to pay 150 INR. So make your plans accordingly and enjoy exploring this amazing place.

    6. Lady Hydari Park

    Another beautiful destination where tourists visiting Shillong can enjoy their time is the Lady Hydari Park that is situated in the Laban Area of Shillong. This park is a prime location for couples visiting Shillong because of the beauty around and yes; the peacefulness as well.

    The park is closed on Mondays and the timing to visit here is between 8 am and 5 pm. Interestingly, there is a butterfly museum that has visiting hours between 11 am and 4 pm. The entry fee of the park is INR 10 for adults, INR 5 for children and senior citizens, and just INR 2 for specially-abled. You can plan a quick visit to this park as well as the museum.

    7. Rhino Heritage Museum

    The Rhino Heritage Museum is another interesting and important attraction in Shillong that is situated in the Bara Bazaar area. This museum is completely dedicated to army personnel, rifles, missiles, and other similar things.

    There is a good exhibition of a lot of things in the museum that can be explored when you visit here. If you want to visit here, you need to keep in mind that the museum remains closed on Thursdays. The visiting hours of Rhino Heritage Museum are between 9 am and 1 pm or 9 pm and 5 pm. The other highlight of this museum is still the weaponry of the Japanese army.

    8. Beadon Bishop View Point

    Beadon Bishop View Point is an enthralling tourist attraction in Shillong where adventure enthusiasts are up for a rejuvenating treat.

    The gorgeous waterfall offers an amazing view of the waterfall and the surrounding that’s lush green. It is also a picnic spot where people love to spend some time with their family.
