1. Bhangarh Fort

Bhangarh Fort has a history of unfortunate events and it is now amongst the spookiest places in India. Even ASI has declared this place to be the most haunted in the country. They have also marked it unfit for visiting here after dark.

People though enjoy camping around Bhangarh Fort you should be wary. And it is advised not to break the rules defined by the authorities. It is also noticed that even the birds and animals vacate the premises when it starts to get dark.

What’s the story?

There are multiple stories related to the fort and one amongst them that prevails strongly is about the queen (Rani Ratnawati) and a tantric. According to the sources, the queen of Bhangarh was blessed with eternal beauty and charm. In the city lived a tantric who got infatuated by the beauty of the queen and wanted to marry her. He knew it wouldn’t be possible in the right ways so he decided to take the help of his magic.

The tantric used his dark magic spell on a perfume that was used by the queen. But she was warned by one of her servants about this. So she threw the perfume bottle out of the window in anger. The bottle struck on a boulder which rolled and crushed the tantric. In his last breath, the Tantric cursed the entire place for its doom.

What’s spooky here?

People have claimed sightings of many shadows and have heard screams of women. Some also claim to have heard the tantric cursing and shouting about the doom of the entire place. Whatever be the thing, it surely becomes very spooky or eerie around the fort after dark. And the place gives a very negative aura according to the locals and people who have stayed at the nearest possible location.

2. Rana Kumbha Palace

Location: Chittorgarh Fort Village, Chittorgarh, Rajasthan

Visiting hours: 9 am to 5 pm

Another palace that remains haunted in the vicinity of Rajasthan is the Rana Kumbha Palace which is located in Chittorgarh. And why not, this is the very place where Rani Padmini and 700 other women performed Jauhar and cursed the fort ever since. There have been sightings, noises, shouts, and sobbing heard by the locals several times. But what is the true story about this place?

What’s the story?

One of the most haunted forts of Rajasthan, Rana Kumbha Palace is a legendary place where many great kings have ruled. It is in the legends that Sultan Khilji attacked the palace and killed the king in the battlefield by foul ways. All of this because he wanted to marry queen Padmini who was very beautiful.

When the queen got the news of her king’s death, she and 700 other women performed Jauhar in which all of the women to protect their honour jumped in the fire.

What’s spooky here?

People have heard shouting and screams. There was a group of people who stayed inside the palace overnight and they heard someone asking for help. When one of them turned around, they saw a woman in royal attire with a burnt face asking for help. This freaked them out and the same things have been told by a few more people.

3. Kuldhara Village

Location: 17 km west to Jaisalmer city

Visiting hours: Dawn to Dusk

Whenever there is a talk about abandoned or haunted places in India, Kuldhara is one name that comes to our head. This was a village that was established in the early 13th century near Jaisalmer city. Kuldhara was once a very prosperous and rich village that was filled with Paliwal Brahmins. But now it is an abandoned place and cursed too. It is said that the village has been abandoned since the early 19th century and has been the same till date. There have been trials of construction done in the place but all of it failed badly.

What’s the story?

It is said that once this rich and prosperous village was thriving with Paliwal Brahmins who were also known to be one of the elite families in the country. Once the minister of the district, Salim Singh came to the village to collect the taxes and saw the sarpanch’s daughter (who was very beautiful.) He expressed his desire to marry the girl in front of her father. But according to the Indian culture of that time, the Brahmins did not marry their women other than a Brahmin family. Owing to this, the sarpanch refused to do so.

In rage, the minister warned the villagers to either ask the sarpanch to get his daughter marry him or the tax will be increased many folds. Additionally, the minister also said that he would forcefully marry a girl if the villagers didn’t agree. Seeing no other options, the entire village of Brahmins fled from the place in a single night. And not just one or two, people from all the 85 villages vanished overnight.

What’s spooky here?

Actually, frankly speaking, there are a lot of mixed reactions of people here. The caretakers and guards of this place say that they haven’t found or heard anything unusual here all their life. But there are others who say that they have sighted ghosts and similar figures on their night stay (which is banned.)

4. Jagatpura

Location: Region near the Jaipur Airport, Jaipur, Rajasthan

Amongst the haunted places in Rajasthan, there is a huge diversity in terms of place. Where some palaces are known to be haunted, there are other villages and areas that are haunted. And one such place is located in the capital city of Rajasthan, Jaipur. The place is currently known as Jagatpura. It is a beautiful section of the city but is also named amongst the spookiest places in Rajasthan.

What’s the story?

The place is known to be haunted since the era of the last king who ruled here. It is said that the king was very greedy and cruel. That is the reason why people cursed him a lot while they died due to starvation. And since then the entire region has been cursed and spooky. Where many visitors have complained of figures asking for help. The residents of Jagatpura have many times encountered witches and daunting figures at night. There was a time when all of this was so frequent that people stopped coming out of their houses after dark.

5. Jal Mahal

Location: Amer Rd, Jal Mahal, Amer, Jaipur, Rajasthan

Timings: You can visit here anytime in the day

Actually, apart from some rickshaw drivers and locals, there has never been a thing about this palace being spooky. It was once an excursion and party place for the king but over time the mahal deteriorated. It was once a 5 story building but 3 floors have now submerged underwater because of a lack of restoration.

The locals believed that it is a supernatural force that is becoming the doom of this palace. And there are some people who have confirmed that they have seen ghostly figures around the palace.

Note: Now, people are not allowed to visit the palace because it isn’t safe. The building is in bad shape. But the locals still believe that it is none other than a supernatural power doing all this.

6. Nahargarh Fort

Nahargarh Fort, perched on the Aravalli Hills overlooking Jaipur, is surrounded by eerie legends and paranormal tales. Visitors have reported mysterious sounds, footsteps, and inexplicable shadows within its historic walls. One of the most chilling stories involves the spirit of a former king, Nahar Singh, who is believed to haunt the fort, protecting it from intruders.

The spectral presence of this guardian is said to be particularly strong in the monsoon season. Many also claim to have heard ghostly voices and seen apparitions in the fort’s dark corridors and cells. 7. Brijraj Bhawan Palace Hotel

Brijraj Bhawan Palace Hotel in Kota, Rajasthan, conceals a ghostly secret. It’s believed to be inhabited by the spirit of Major Burton, a British official who met a tragic end during the 1857 Indian Mutiny. Guests have reported paranormal occurrences such as moving objects, eerie footsteps, and unexplained whispers.

Major Burton’s presence is most palpable in the corridors and rooms of the hotel, creating an unsettling atmosphere for some visitors.
